PLATELET-RICH FIBRIN THERAPY (PRF)

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy is a medical technique that uses the patient’s own blood to stimulate tissue regeneration and accelerate the healing process. It is an advanced form of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and involves the collection and concentration of platelets, growth factors, and other healing components found in blood.

Unlike PRP, which is a liquid preparation, PRF involves the creation of fibrin matrix that holds and slowly releases growth factors. The blood is drawn and processed without the use of anticoagulants, allowing the formation of a fibrin clot during centrifugation.

Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) has gained popularity in aesthetic and cosmetic applications as it offers a natural and autologous approach to rejuvenating the skin and improving its texture and appearance.

PRF is derived from the patient’s own blood, making it a natural and autologous option. The use of one’s own biological material reduces the risk of allergic reactions or rejection.

Key points about the use of Biological PRF in aesthetics and cosmetic procedures:

Facial Rejuvenation:
* Biological PRF is commonly used in facial rejuvenation to address concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity.
* It is applied topically or injected into targeted areas to stimulate collagen production and promote tissue regeneration.

PRF with Microneedling:
* Combining biological PRF with Microneedling, has become popular for improving skin texture and reducing the appearance of scars and wrinkles.
* Microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin, and the PRF is then applied to enhance the healing response.

Volume Restoration:
* PRF can be used for volume restoration in areas where a subtle increase in fullness is desired, such as the cheeks or under the eyes.
* The growth factors in PRF promote the regeneration of collagen and hyaluronic acid, contributing to a natural-looking volume enhancement.

Scar Revision:
* PRF has shown promise in scar revision, helping to improve the appearance of scars from acne, surgery, or injuries. It works by promoting the regeneration of healthy skin tissue and improving overall skin quality.

Hair Restoration:
* PRF is a treatment for thinning and hair loss. When injected to the scalp, PRF stimulate hair follicles, improve blood circulation, and encourage hair growth.

Dark Circles and Under-Eye Hollows:
* PRF injections can be used to address dark circles and under-eye hollows, providing a natural and gradual improvement in the delicate skin around the eyes.

Hand Rejuvenation:
* PRF can be applied to the hands to address signs of ageing, such as volume loss and thinning skin. The growth factors in PRF help restore collagen and improve the overall texture of the skin on the hands.

Minimal Downtime:
* PRF treatments typically have minimal downtime , allowing patients to resume their daily activities relatively quickly.

Individualised Treatment Plans:
* Our aesthetic practitioner often tailor PRF treatments to the individual needs and goals of the patient, ensuring a personalised and targeted approach.

It is important to note that while PRF has shown promise in various aesthetic applications, individual results may vary and the effectiveness of the treatment depends on factors such as the patient’s skin condition, age and overall health. Consulting with a qualified aesthetic professional is crucial to determine the most suitable approach for achieving desired cosmetic outcomes.

What To Expect During a Biological Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) Treatment:

Pretreatment Instructions
• Discontinue the use of Retin-A, Retinols, Vitamin A creams, & other topical medications 7 days before your microneedling with PRF treatment.
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine, & cigarettes for 3 days before & after your treatment. Smokers especially do not heal well due to lower blood flow, & more PRF will be needed to revascularise these tissues.
• For at least 3 days to 1 week prior to & after your treatment, avoid medicines or supplements that delay clotting such as aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve (all nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents), ginkgo blob, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids. Remember, we are creating inflammation & need platelets to clot effectively. Use Paracetamol if needed.
• Prescription medications (including heart & blood pressure medication) should be taken as prescribed right up to, & including, the day of & the day after your treatments.
• Avoid excessive sun or heat exposure at least 3 days prior to your appointment.
• Avoid tanning beds for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment.
• Avid wearing ANY makeup on the day of your appointment. We will likely be microneedling, & we do not want to send makeup/chemicals into the skin.
• Increase your intake of fluids the day before your procedure by simply drinking two glasses of water in the morning, two glasses at lunch, & two glasses at dinner, in addition to your normal intake of water.
• Drink A Lot of water on the day of your appointment.
• Drink a full bottle of water (500ml) at least 2 hours before your session.
• Avoid eating for 2 hours before your session.
• If you have history of HSV infections (oral cold sores), you will be required to take antiviral medication (acyclovir) for 2 days prior to treatment and 3 days after. Please notify us.

During The Procedure
The end standard of biological PRF protocol involves microneedling. A topical numbing cream is applied to remove discomfort and the healing is very fast (24 hours) because were able to get the PRF into and under the various skin layers. You’ll be fully numb, but if you are uncomfortable, ask to have the depth of the microneedling device modified and/ or if it is possible to reapply topical cream. The goal is for you to be entirely comfortable throughout the procedure.

After the procedure is completed, your skin will be pinkish. This is totally expected, especially if we are using PRF. Ideally, you want to stay this way for 6 hours while the growth factors from your PRF soak into your skin. While this may seem alarming at first, the redness will be significantly decreased within 24 to 48 hours. Do not worry! It’s part of the healing and regeneration process, and this protocol was specifically designed to treat you in a way that maximises your results.

Post treatment Instructions
• Drink at least 2 litres of water the day of treatment and each day for 1 week afterward. Hydration is key for good recovery and skin health.
• Do not touch, press, rub, or manipulate treated areas for at least 8 hours.
• Ice may be applied for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off after the procedure for swelling/bruising in injected areas (if needed).
• Wash the face minimally 6 hours after treatment. Use a gentle cleanser. Gently massage the face with tepid water and remove all serum and dried blood. This will improve the appearance of the skin and also allow for better subsequent product application.
• No sunscreen or makeup can be worn for 24hours following treatment.
• Apply Aquaphor post treatment as often as desired when skin dryness occurs. Aquaphor may be applied several times per day.
• After 48 to 72 hours following treatment, you can return to your regular skincare regimen.
• Avoid applying any active skincare like retinols, Vitamin A for a month
• Vitamin C can be applied a week after your treatment
• Minimal makeup can be applied after 72 hours post treatment, but continue to use a gentle cleanser and sunblock with an SPF 50.
• Avoid alcohol-based toners for 7 days as well as excessive sun exposure for 10 days minimum.
• Do not go swimming for at least 24 hours post treatment.
• Do not exercise or do strenuous activity for 2 days post treatment. Sweating and gym environments are harmful, rife with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions.
• If scabbing occurs, do not pick or remove scabs. This could lead to unintentional scarring. Wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser.
• For treatment of acne scars, usually five treatments are recommended, each 4 weeks apart.
• For scalp application, shampoo and condition your scalp daily starting from the first evening or the next morning after PRF.

**It is normal to experience possible bruising, redness, itching soreness, and swelling, which usually subside within 24 to 48 hours but may last from 3 to 10 days following your procedure. Arnica and Bromelaine are helpful to decrease bruising and swelling.
