SKIN NEEDLING

Microneedling is an FDA-approved electronic fractional device that is used to rejuvenate the skin and improve the skin surface by reducing fine lines, expression lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, and acne scars. It aims to restore the skin’s healthy appearance by stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin in the deep, dermal layer, while bypassing the epidermis or the outer layer of the skin.

Microneedling is a relatively new treatment gaining increasing popularity as it is effective, safe and pain free. The concept is based on skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical injury. As the Microneedling device moves across the skin, it makes pinpoint punctures to create very minor ‘micro-injuries.’ In response to the perceived injury, a cascade of growth factor is released, which in turn triggers new collagen synthesis. While most commonly used on the face, Microneedling can also be used to restore and regenerate the skin on the neck, chest and hands. Microneedling is safe for all skin colours and for all skin types.

This process has 2 major benefits:

1. It effectively stimulates collagen formation and provides a clear channel for topical serums to be absorbed through the surface of the skin.

2. By persistently triggering this healing process with a series of Microneedling treatments, the body keeps repairing the skin incrementally to offer a result similar to fractional laser or chemical peels, but without the side effects and extended downtime. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin.

Microneedling is used to treat:

• Wrinkles and fine lines.
• Lack of skin firmness and elasticity
• Scarring
• Acne and chicken pox scars
• Enlarged open pores
• Sun damage
• Pigmentation
• Under eye bags
• Stretch marks

Procedure

Microneedling is performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile, disposable tips that allows effective treatment to hard-to-reach places like around the eyes, nose and lips. A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied on the skin prior to the procedure (for patient’s comfort). It also includes the application of healing gel and serum. The entire procedure is normally completed within 30 – 45 minutes depending on the required treatment and the anatomical site. New healthy skin appears about 4 weeks after treatment and continues to generate collagen for up to 4 to 6 months.

Pre-Treatment

• You will be asked to discontinue use of Retin A, Retinols, Vitamin A creams and other topical medications for 3 to 5 days before your Microneedling treatment.
• It is required that you wear sunscreen daily and use the appropriate home skincare products like gentle cleanser and moisturisers.

How many skin needling treatment will I need?
For the treatment of acne scars and skin rejuvenation usually 5 – 8 treatments are recommended For management of stretch marks and surgical or keloid scars usually up to 8 – 10 treatments are required, spaced apart every 5 to 6 weeks. If scars or stretch marks are 6 months old or younger, less time in between treatment is fine.
